Abstract
Headache is a common symptom caused by a wide variety of diseases. From a clinical standpoint, differentiating primary headaches from secondary headaches is crucial for proper management. Recent advances in basic research resulted in the development of more specific and effective therapies for primary headaches, especially for migraine. These new specific medications are expected to give clinicians more management options and to lessen the disability burden of many migraine sufferers. In this updated review, common primary headaches including migraine, tension-type headache, and cluster headache, as well as two common cranial neuralgias, trigeminal neuralgia and postherpetic neuralgia are described.
